Great Price, Chef, and Staff Attention

This community has been a good fit for my mom. She is really adapting and everyone has been very friendly and helpful. I picked this community because the price was in our ball park and more great reasons. I had a chance to talk with the residents and they liked the place and they felt they got the attention they needed from staff. The chef is great. She gives an amazing menu daily with great variety to pick from. I also like how the assistant activities director always invites my mom to activities that are happening and my mom loves some specific games.

Excellent move in experience

Jeremy Fontenot is outstanding at guiding families through the process of touring, checking in and moving into their apartments. Jeremy and his staff worked diligently to get my aunt transferred from another facility and settled in--even on a Saturday when most weekday staff is not there. My aunt is happy and secure in a very welcoming environment. I would readily recommend Brookdale Castle Hills to anyone!

Satisfied Customer

The care was exceptionally good. The administrator was very attentive to the patients and staff. I was very favorably impressed. The facility was always clean and well furnished. The staff was caring and attentive. I have one complaint. The AC unit was not working properly. Some rooms were always too cold while others were too hot. I was very satisfied with the care my mother received. I would recommend Colonial Gardens to anyone looking for a care facility.

Valuable Find and a Great Value

(Updated from original May 2014 review.) My mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease 12 years ago. When the memory care facility near her [location removed] home told our family in 2014 they could no longer care for her, we decided a big move to be near me in San Antonio was the best thing. Through A Place for Mom, I found Colonial Gardens and grateful they had a place for mom! We've never regretted it. They're dedicated to dementia-related residents and the facility design is conducive to that: the two secure buildings with up to 16 and 20 private rooms and homey dining and living rooms. Both have huge, peaceful fenced backyards. CG is older than many facilities in town, but generally well cared for. However, the caregivers make the difference at CG. Despite some turnover of some staff and directors over the past 6 years, our favorites remain constant and genuinely caring. Current Executive Director [name removed] and her team are great)We can never thank them enough for their dedication to be mom's loving extended family. Remarkably, she's been at CG for almost 6 years with little illness except the continuing decline from the Disease, which is a testament to the great care she receives there. As I write this review, we're in the midst of The Pandemic and they're selfless in protecting our loved ones.

A period of change

Gemstone us not a bad home. They are in a period where there is a lot of change in staff. The people are very nice. I am hopeful that when things settle this will be a good home. There is also a good support group of the residents over ones.

We visit her three or four times a week. It is consistently good.

Owner is often on premises-staff is always receptive to my concerns and will stop what grey are doing to assist if needed. Very quiet place, clean and smells good. Staff often go door to door to remind residents of meal times, exercise, etc. They are pretty easy going, and we have not had any issues/difficulties with them. We are very pleased with our choice-we looked at 5 or 6 facilities but this was the stand out for us.

Great value

Staff there generally nice and helpful but there are usually only a few that make the difference as in this business there is a lot of turnover in staff. It is a very good value for the money.

Friendly staff

We were only here for about a month. It was a great facility. The people were all very friendly and accommodating. They were one of the more reasonably priced places for what you got. In our case it did get confusing as to how much dementia she really had in order to be in the assisted living vs memory care, that was the only reason I gave it a 4 overall. They assessed her as assisted living but once we moved in they wanted to move her over to memory care. I would recommend The Gardens of Castle Hills to others.

Friendly staff

The staff members are very helpful and they are more the willing to do whatever to help our loved one, they have been very accommodating to make our loved one feel comfortable. We have heard that the meals and dining service is decent and for what we are receiving we feel the value is worth it. Based on our experience we would recommend this community to other families.

New Hope has a lot to improve on

They are nice and friendly to visit with, but there are no activities and it seems like that would be a nice thing to add on. And the food needs some improvement, they could offer more of a variety. My loved one kind of gets the same thing everyday. The communication between New Hope is a little bit hard because the people they had don't speak English very well, and one of them doesn't understand English at all. Recently, as in a couple days ago, they've hired someone who does understand and speak English. Management and administration could check the rooms and patients more often. Right now there are about seven residents I believe with no transportation available. When I visit, I just go and sign in and they will take my temperature. After that, you then visit with your loved one in their individual room. One nice thing is, they did provide furniture and TV for the room. My loved one's room was a bit small, but it has a couple windows, and a closet. The restroom is across the hall, it's close. I would not recommend New Hope to others because of the language barrier between the staff and our family, the food, and the management & administration.
