How we determine rankings
Our 2023 state ranking for assisted living uses A Place for Mom’s proprietary data collected from our community partners. First, we sorted through our metrics and grouped them into three pillars that are key in a quality assisted living experience. We weighted these pillars differently based on insights from our senior living experts. Then, we used these categories and their weighting to determine how each state ranks.

The average cost of assisted living in Michigan is $4,271 per month or $51,252 per year according to A Place for Mom’s proprietary data. That’s just below the national average of $4,740 per month. These costs reflect the room and board rates in our partner communities. Care services and some amenities are typically billed separately.
Assisted living costs vary depending on several factors, such as apartment floor plan size, quality of amenities, and a senior’s care needs. Typically, costs increase as floor plans become more spacious, amenities become more luxurious, and care needs intensify.
The cost of assisted living in Michigan is comparable to that in other Midwestern states, but nearby Indiana offers seniors and their families some savings. Throughout the state, costs vary, with communities in Detroit costing slightly more and those Grand Rapids charging about $100 per month less than the state average.
Independent living, for seniors who are able to live alone, is a little under $500 less per month.

Most families use a combination of private funds and public assistance programs to pay for assisted living in Michigan. Because costs and eligibility can vary widely, it’s best to plan early to understand which payment options apply to your loved one’s situation. Read more about each payment option below, and see our complete guide to paying for long-term care.
Private pay options include personal savings accounts, home equity, and insurance benefits. Another option is a health savings account (HSA), which can help with medical expenses, but not room and board in assisted living.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) provides several benefit programs that eligible veterans and their surviving spouses may use to offset the cost of assisted living. Because navigating veterans benefits and the application process can be complicated, it’s a good idea to seek benefits counseling from an accredited benefits counselor before applying. Find a county based veterans service officer (VSO), call 800-642-4838 or send an email to MVAAResourceCenter@michigan.gov.
Medicaid is a health insurance program for people who have low or limited incomes. Michigan Medicaid is administered by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. Eligible residents can use Medicaid to cover some health and personal care services, but not room and board in an assisted living community.
Michigan’s regular Medicaid plan and the state’s MI Choice Waiver both cover many home- and community-based services (HCBS), including but not limited to:
If you or your loved one has questions about Michigan’s Medicaid programs, contact a local office of the Department of Health and Human Services or call one of the many Area Agencies on Aging throughout the state.
Medicare is a federal health insurance program created for individuals aged 65 or older and people with disabilities. It won’t cover the cost of room and board in Michigan assisted living but can typically be used to cover medically necessary expenses.
Michigan’s State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) provides counselors who can help your loved one understand Medicare benefits. They can be reached at 800-803-7174.
In Michigan, the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs is responsible for ensuring that the state’s assisted living facilities are licensed and in compliance with state regulations. There are two types of facilities that provide assisted living services:
Both types of communities must be inspected at licensure and annually thereafter. This and other regulations ensure that Michigan’s assisted living residents receive safe, high-quality care by specifying minimum standards for facility operations, staff training, and resident care.
Michigan’s Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs provides the Statewide Search for Adult Foster Care / Homes for the Aged Facilities lookup tool, which includes communities’ license type, standing, and inspection reports.
State regulations — and a community’s track record with inspections and licensing — offer important insights into safety and quality of care in senior living communities.
Download the Guide to Senior Living Licensure and Inspection Reports to learn what to look for in inspection reports and what questions to ask when touring communities. This resource explains how to use state licensure and inspection information to evaluate a community’s compliance, care standards, and responsiveness to issues.
