Cost of assisted living in Mississippi

Seniors in Mississippi can expect to pay around $3,577 per month or $42,924 per year for assisted living, according to A Place for Mom’s proprietary data.[01] This average reflects only the base rent at our partner communities. Your loved one’s cost may vary depending on care needs, room size and design, and extra services and amenities.

Mississippi’s relatively lower cost of living (about 17% lower than the national average),[02] is reflected in its lower average monthly cost for assisted living when compared with other Southern states, such as Tennessee ($4,302 per month). Neighboring Alabama offers a more comparable average rate of $3,946 per month.  Within the state, assisted living communities in the capital city of Jackson have an average cost of $4,491 per month, while the coastal city of Gulfport is more in line with the state average.

Assisted living in Florida is more cost-effective than higher-acuity care types such as memory care or nursing homes, offering a balanced option for seniors who need daily support without full-time medical care.

Paying for assisted living in Mississippi

Many families use a combination of private funds, such as income and savings, and publicly funded benefit programs, such as VA benefits and Medicaid, to pay for assisted living. Because costs and eligibility can vary widely, it’s best to plan early to understand which payment options apply to your loved one’s situation. For a high-level overview of payment options, consult our guide to paying for long-term care.

Private pay options

Private pay is the most common way that families in Mississippi cover the cost of assisted living. These include savings accounts, retirement benefits, Social Security benefits, and other sources of income. Certain long-term care insurance policies may also cover assisted living, but it’s important to note that the policy must be in place before care is needed.

VA benefits

Seniors who are veterans or their surviving spouses may qualify for benefits through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) that can be used to offset the cost of assisted living. Benefits may include a veterans or survivors pension, or disability benefits. Mississippi Veterans Affairs helps veterans navigate their options through State Benefits Specialists, who are available throughout the state to help. Find a benefits specialist in your loved one’s county or call the main state office at 601-576-4850.

Medicaid

Medicaid is a joint program of the federal and state governments and is designed to support people who have low incomes. While Mississippi Medicaid won’t pay for room and board in an assisted living community, it may be used to cover the cost of certain personal and health care services provided there.

In addition to the state’s regular Medicaid plan, Mississippi Medicaid offers two home- and community-based services (HCBS) waivers. Eligible seniors may be eligible for the Assisted Living Waiver or the Elderly and Disabled Waiver.[04,05] Both programs cover a variety of supportive services, such as personal care, occupational and physical therapy, and occasional skilled nursing care.

If you or your loved one has questions about Mississippi’s Medicaid program, call 800-421-2408, or visit a regional office.

Medicare

Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people who are 65 and older, as well as younger people who are living with certain conditions. It won’t cover room and board in assisted living, but for residents who need health care products and services that are part of a physician’s care plan, Medicare can be used to offset those costs.[06]

Volunteers with the Mississippi State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) provide free, unbiased counseling services to help for seniors to make informed decisions about their health care. Call them at 844-822-4622.

Assisted living requirements and regulations in Mississippi

The Division of Health Facilities Licensure and Certification within Mississippi’s Department of Health is responsible for inspecting and licensing personal care homes, which are classified as:

  • Assisted living facilities. These communities are permitted to provide personal and health care services, as well as emergency response services, for people who need help ambulating.
  • Residential living facilities. Designed to support people who can move and transfer on their own, these communities may provide personal care and mental health services.

Before either type of personal care home may be licensed in Mississippi, it must pass inspection.[07] Subsequent inspections are carried out every 24 months once a license has been granted. This and other regulations are designed to ensure residents receive safe, high-quality, and affordable care, and specify standards for resident care, facility operations, and staff training.

How to check license status and inspection reports for Mississippi assisted living facilities

Mississippi doesn’t make its assisted living inspection reports available online, but the state’s Department of Health maintains a current list of licensed facilities. If you or your loved one has questions about the directory, call 601-364-1108.

Why do licensure and inspection reports matter to families?

State regulations — and a community’s track record with inspections and licensing — offer important insights into safety and quality of care in senior living communities.

Download the Guide to Senior Living Licensure and Inspection Reports to learn what to look for in inspection reports and what questions to ask when touring communities. This resource explains how to use state licensure and inspection information to evaluate a community’s compliance, care standards, and responsiveness to issues.
